Learning Never Stops

From the time we are born, we are told to do this don't do that and if we do,we are corrected. Eventually we do it right. This occurs at all stages of our life. We start school from the age of four or five years in the infant school. We learn our ABC's, our math's tables etc. We progress to Primary school where we are taught more subjects. In my day, if you were lucky, we went on to Secondary school. Very few of my generation went on to University.
We started Working at eighteen years of age, thinking that schooling was finished. We join companies and discover we have to do training for the positions we take up. We feel the necessity to improve our job opportunities, so we continue to study. Then the time comes from some of us to settle down and marry, so it becomes important to earn more, so we are back to studying again to advance up the ladder and earn more. Then the children come along and eventually go to school. Here we try and help with exercises and because new school subjects have been added, we start studying them to help the children.
Eventually the time comes when we retire and we think that all the learning is over. But no, the bug has bitten and we start to look for information on different skills and leisure activities. Would'nt it be great if we could use computers to find this information. Great idea, so we enroll in a computer course and hey presto, a new medium opens up to us. We now have the tools to search for any information on any subject or activity we want.
I would, at this point, like to thank the tutors at DCU Older Learners classes on Saturdays. Long may it continue and broaden the courses. The student volunteers are extremely helpful and should be admired for affording us their free time to assist us we our learning.
As I said at the start, you never stop learning. But, it's a two exercise, the student learn for our life experiences and they assist us with our new studies.
